Modern Day Slavery In Saudi Arabia
From the Dispatches series 1996
Filmed covertly in Saudi Arabia, tells the story of one of the 2,000 Filipinos who leave their country every year to work abroad. The woman, whose youngest daughter is in need of a heart operation, left her family two years earlier to work in Saudi Arabia. She ran away from her first employer, who not only failed to pay her but subjected her to abuse and took away her passport. For the next two years, she was passed from household to household, working as an unpaid maid. Eventually, she had to turn to illegal means to escape from her desperate situation. Broadcast on Channel Four in February 1996 in the `Dispatches' series.
