Suicide bomb plot trial: alleged ringleader insists he was only bragging about al-Qaeda membership.
An alleged terror plot ringleader pretended to be planning an attack to get revenge on some of his co-accused after rumours he was a Pakistani spy, a court heard.
Irfan Naseer is accused of planning to target the UK with eight suicide bombers to cause mass carnage on the streets.
But he claims he was only bragging and pretended “to be al-Qaeda” as part of a scam to get back at some of the other alleged gang members, Woolwich Crown Court heard.
There were rumours in his community in 2009 he was a member of ISI, the Pakistani secret service.
The rumours had caused problems in his community in Birmingham and led to threats, including from some “gangsters”.
Giving evidence, he said, as a result, he let them believe he was al-Qaeda so they would be scared off, the court heard. ... more here
